What is fixed test?

Fixed test is the test that has some certain questions. Fixed test also follows GMAT rules: Verbal test has 41 questions (including CR, RC and SC questions) and Quant test has 37 questions (including DS and PS questions).

In fixed test, your ability will be estimated by your performance and difficult levels of questions. Those questions in fixed tests will be used for adaptive tests later.

What is adaptive test?

Adaptive test is well known in GMAT. "Adaptive" here means that the system will choose a new question based on your performance. If you answer a question correct, the system could give you a harder question. If you answer a question incorrect, the system could give you an easier question. On the other hand, questions in adaptive test are vary.

Unlike fixed test, adaptive test will calculate your ability by many factors. One of the most important thing to get high score in GMAT test is that you have to keep your performance consistent. To know why, read some questions below.

What are the sources of those questions?

We guarantee that all questions used in this website are from verified sources so you don't have to worry about those questions in the test.

All questions in fixed tests are from GMAC Paper Tests.

All questions in adaptive tests are from vary sources: Official Guide, GMATPrep, Veritas, Manhattan,...

How does the adaptive system work?

The adaptive system runs with a complex algorithm to calculate your real ability. Thus, if you take the test twice, it is unlikely that you will face the same questions. However, there are still some exceptions.

The question bank could have an effect on the adaptive system. If the question bank contains few hard questions, you will face a lot of easy questions so your score could be higher. If the question bank contains few easy questions, you will face a lot of hard questions so your score could be lower. Thus, we recommend you not to take any adaptive test if the quality of the question bank isn't good enough.

What if I want to retake test?

Sure. You could reset your taken tests at any time you want. Note that retake the test could make you face the question repetition so your score could inflate.

Could I resume any test that I haven't completed yet?

Absolutely! You could resume your test at any time. Note that you could take only one adaptive test at any time.

Why does the system keep saying that there weren't enough questions to start an adaptive test?

To ensure the quality of the test, we have set some conditions to the question bank. If you face that notice, it seems that you have completed all available adaptive tests or the question bank doesn't have enough questions to start a new test. You could wait for a period of time until the question bank has enough questions so you could take another adaptive test.

Why does the system keep saying that the question bank wasn't good enough to start an adaptive test?

To ensure the quality of the test, we have set some conditions to the question bank. If you face that notice, it seems that the quality of those questions in question bank isn't good enough to start an adaptive test. For example, almost of those questions are easy so this could make your score higher than normal. You could wait for a period of time until the question bank has enough questions so you could take another adaptive test.

What if I answered a question correct or incorrect?

In the fixed test, the next question will appear regardless of your answer. However, in the adaptive test, the next question will change regarding your performance. For example, if you answer a question correct, the next question could be harder. If you answer a question incorrect, the next question could be easier.

Why my correct percentage is very high but my score and my percentile are still low?

This is true in adaptive test. The correct percentage has some effects on the final score, but not all. If your correct percentage is 90%, this performance doesn't guarantee that your percentile will be at 90%.

As we said above, the consistency of your performance is more important than the correct percentage. For example, your performance at the first part of the test must be the same as your performance at the last part of the test. If your performance is inconsistent, the final score would be hurt much.

Why my correct percentage is medium but my score and my percentile are quite high?

This is true in adaptive test. Read the question above.

Are first 10 questions important in GMAT?

Some test takers and GMAT experts said that the first 10 questions in GMAT test are important because those questions will help to estimate your score so you could pay more time with first 10 questions. This information is both true and false.

Any question in GMAT test is important. Pay more attention in first 10 questions could reduce your time to complete remaining questions so your score will be hurt. In GMAT test, you have to pay your attention carefully in any question appeared on the screen because if you answer a question wrong, your score could be hurt much. The most important thing is to keep your performance consistent.

For example, if you are at 680 level. If you answer a 600 question wrong, you will have to pay much for that mistake since your score could be reduced to 620. However, if you answer a 700 question wrong, your score could be still at 660 or 670.

What are experimental questions?

In GMAT test, some questions are experimental and the system doesn't calculate your score based on those experimental questions. The problem is that those experimental questions will appear randomly in GMAT test so test takers don't know which question is experimental. A wise strategy is to take every question seriously, don't care whether a question is experimental or not.

How many experimental questions are there in a GMAT test?

It varies. In Verbal section, there are 11 experimental questions. In Quant section, there are 9 experimental questions. We also use some experimental questions in adaptive tests to raise more questions for question bank.
